Nuclear Power Plants: A Hysteria Based on Fiction
12Mar11
Due to the recent events in Japan, with a nuclear power plant going into meltdown (of the facts we do not yet all know) I’d like to go on a little rant here on nuclear energy and the state of Japan’s health. I would like to point out a few things.
1. There are giant oil drums that have been burning as well in Japan that nobody seems to mention anything about.
2. A nuclear power plant produces on the scale of 6 magnitudes (10^6) times less waste than a coal power plant for the same amount of energy. (yes thats a million times less)

Bob, thank you for this link. I have a few comments about the video.
I was under the understanding that there was no nuclear fallout, no nuclear explosion that occurred, thus no direct threat from a nuclear meltdown, which leaves the Japanese disaster at a much much less of a devastation magnitude than Chernobyl. At Chernobyl the containment vessels that she is talking about, where all the fuel resides, blew up, causing the nuclear fallout. In Japan, there was reported a crack in the containment vessel? The cooling ponds of the holding pens were on fire, but all the reports have stated they were contained. I would like to hear the full details about this in its entirety.
Although there are many points that Dr Helen Caldicott pointed out that ‘could’ potentially happen, they did not happen. Yes, nuclear energy has a potential for being extremely hazardous if not properly cared for to the human population and to the environment (one and the same we should see them as really), but so does some household cleaners some use every day (slightly less energy dense for sure).
I believe that learning about the dangers involved with the industry, with nuclear energy, is very advantageous for any and all who take the time to learn, but to be honest, like I’ve already stated, Dr Caldicott paints a very catastrophic, dooms-day’ish picture, with facts that are indeed correct, but possibly don’t have correlation to the context she’s using them in, although she did mention how even if experts and scientists say “it’s ok” it can still not be ok.
“however, so far, no human is known to have died because of inhaling or ingesting plutonium and many people have measurable amounts of plutonium in their bodies” (Read more: http://www.lenntech.com/periodic/elements/pu.htm#ixzz1L4MN1iH6 )
I couldn’t agree more with Dr Caldicott about the environmental effects a nuclear fallout would cause, and the severity of Chernobyl. I agree with her education mission and that we, humans as a whole, need to be aware of the dangers. I believe that the biggest risk is, as Dr Caldicott says, a bomb.
Dr Caldicott didn’t mention how much less nuclear fuel is required to make equivalent amounts of energy from coal or oil fuel. I believe its on the scale of 3 magnitudes less (1000).
I will stop here.
Before asserting such stupidities, you should study a bit more… Apparently, you have no idea of the danger of such a catastrophy. Too bad for you.
